FACT 01
Mario was originally a carpenter, not a plumber.
In Donkey Kong (1981), Mario was introduced as "Jumpman," a carpenter rescuing a woman from a rampaging ape.
FACT 02
Mario's full name is Mario Mario.
Officially confirmed by Nintendo, the 1993 movie cemented it โ the brothers are Mario Mario and Luigi Mario.
FACT 03
The iconic jump sound was created with a ping-pong ball.
Sound designer Koji Kondo crafted the original SMB sound effects using everyday objects recorded with creative techniques.
FACT 04
Bowser's name in Japan is "Daimaล Koopa."
Translating roughly to "Great Demon King Koopa" โ significantly more menacing than the English localization suggests.
FACT 05
Mario's hat exists because drawing hair was too hard.
Shigeru Miyamoto gave Mario the red cap because animating hair with the limited pixels of the NES era was technically impossible.
